Visa Types

Following are the basic visa groups that have several subcategories (or purposes) that might fit you. The main visa types are named and explained below.

• Immigration Visa(M)

  The purpose of a migrant visa is to let you immigrate to Colombia for several reasons. The sub-categories are a bunch of reasons and purposes for which you would want to immigrate to Colombia. The purposes may as follows:

  • Work Visa: Applicable for foreigners having a job in Colombia
  • Student Visa: Issued upon foreign students accepted by a Colombian academic institution.
  • Marriage/Spouse Visa: Applies to foreigners who are married to a permanent Colombian resident.
  • Retirement Visa: Issued to foreigners who wish to retire in Colombia.
  • Business Investment Visa: Applicable for foreigners who invest a minimum amount of 100 times the minimum wage in Colombia.
• Residence Visa(R)

  A resident Visa is granted for the purpose of becoming a permanent residence in Colombia, followed by Colombian citizenship. There are 4 main subcategories of R-Visa holders. They are mentioned below:

  • Parents by Birth: Applies to parents (by birth) of a Colombian National.
  • M Visa Holders: Issued upon Migrants who have been a holder of Immigrant visa for at least over 2 years tenure.
  • Reapplication of a Colombian National: Applicable for Ex-Colombian Citizens who gave up their nationalities as a Colombian previously. They can reclaim their citizenship in this way.
  • Investment: Issued to foreign nationals who have invested a sum of money of at least 650 times that of the minimum monthly wage of Colombia.
• Visitor Visa(V)

  Visitor Visas are for foreigners who intend to enter the Colombian territory for a temporary period. There could be various reasons/purposes to visit Colombia. Depending on the purpose, a visitor visa can be defined in the following ways:

  • Tourist Visa: Applicable for tourism in Colombia.
  • Medical Visa: Applies to foreigners who intend to get medical treatment from Colombia.
  • Business Visa: Issued upon foreign businessmen for the purpose of commerce.
  • Transit Visa: Issued to foreigners of different destination passing through the territory of Colombia.
  • Temporary Academic/Work Visa: Applicable for foreigners to attend a conference, internship, seminar, or similar meetings.

• Before starting the online application process, you must have: a photo size 3x4cm, in color, with white background, recent, head-on, without accessories, clear visage, in JPG format with a maximum weight of 300 KB. • If the visa application is sponsored by the applicant or another person: 1. Letter signed by the applicant or by the person that's sponsoring the application which must include: Complete identification of the applicant or of the sponsor (as evidenced in the passport or ID document ), explanation of the ties with the foreigner, motivation of the trip and declaration of economic responsibility for the living and travel expenses of the foreigner. 2. Bank statements of the applicant or the sponsor of the last six (6) months prior to the lodging of the visa application.

• If the visa application is sponsored by one or various entities: 1. Letter signed by the legal representative of the institution or company stating: - Name of the institution or company, NIT (if legally constituted in Colombia) and contact details. - Identification of the foreigner as evidenced in passport. - Activity, duration and agenda of the foreigner while in Colombia. - Explanation of ties with the foreigner and qualifications or expertise. - Declaration of economic responsibility for the living and travel expenses of the foreigner. 2. If the application is sponsored by a private institution or company legally constituted in another country the foreigner must include a certificate of existence and legal representation, or equivalent document, duly apostilled or legalized as per situation. If it is in a language different to Spanish, it must be translated and legalized. 3. Demonstrate financial solvency with the presentation of bank statements of the last 6 months, prior to the lodging of the visa application, belonging to the sponsoring entity or company. Public entities do not have to fulfill this requirement.
