Visa Policies of Mexico

SAE or the Electronic Authorization System (Sistema de Autorización Electrónica) allows the citizens of the eligible countries travelling by air to obtain an electronic authorization to travel to Mexico for transit, tourism, business purposes without a consular visa. The validity for SAE is 30 days with a single entry. Upon arriving, the visitors with an SAE can stay in Mexico for up to 180 days. But this system is only applicable to the travellers who travel to Mexico by air. This is not available for those who enter by land or by sea.

APEC Business Travel Card

Passport holders who possess an APEC Business Travel Card containing MEX code on the reverse that is valid for travel to Mexico can enter without a visa for business trips for up to 90 days. This system is applicable to the following countries:

Visa Requirements

For Business Visa

You can stay in Mexico for up to 180 days without a visa. But make sure you

  • travel for simple business matters that do not involve technical activities or contractual/work activities.
  • hold an updated passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the expected date of exit from Mexico, with one blank visa page
  • hold proof of onward and return flights
  • hold all the travel documents and papers needed for your next destination
  • hold all the documents proving your purpose of travel
  • hold proof of sufficient funds issued for your intended days of stay
  • confirm with your airline that boarding will be permitted without a visa

For Tourist Visa

You can stay in Mexico for up to 180 days without a visa. But make sure you

  • hold an updated passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the expected date of exit from Mexico, with one blank visa page
  • hold proof of onward and return flights
  • hold all the travel documents and papers needed for your next destination
  • hold all the documents proving your purpose of travel
  • hold proof of sufficient funds issued for your intended days of stay

Types of Visa

There are mainly 3 types of Mexican visa, depending on the duration of stay. They are named and explained below:

  • Tourist Visa

    This is a visa issued for the tourists for a short stay in Mexico for up to 180 days. Tourists are issued to visa-required foreign nationals who want to enter Mexico for tourism, business, a visit or any other purpose that does not require employment.

  • Temporary Residence Visa

    This type of visa is issued for the foreigner who intends to or requires to stay in Mexico for a period of more than 6 months, but less than 4 years. This temporary visa can be further divided into 3 categories as follows-

    • Student Visa

      Foreigners who want to study in Mexico for longer than 180 days must get a Student Visa.

    • Work Visa

      Employees who want to work in Mexico for a period longer than 180 days should get a Work Visa.

    • Family Visa

      Everyone who intends to join a family member in Mexico for more than 180 days must apply for this visa.

  • Permanent Residence Visa

    This is issued for foreign nationals who wish to stay in Mexico permanently. It is also termed as Mexico Retirement Visa. Foreigners with close family ties to Mexico as well as those who have lived in Mexico as a temporary resident for at least four years are also eligible for permanent residency in Mexico.

Payment Methods

In most of the cases, the visa fee is paid via credit card or debit cards. You have to enter your credit card details in the application form to proceed with the payment after you properly fill out the boxes as mentioned. After you are done with the payment, your application will be successfully submitted.

By Land

General conditions

The Forma Migratoria Múltiple FMM applicant shall hold a valid and current passport or card passport (Tarjeta Pasaporte) in accordance with the international law regulations; in case the country of citizenship requires it, the passport must have a valid unexpired visa. FMM is an admission document issued to vacationing visitors of certain nationalities. Even though it is known as a tourist visa it is not an official visa.

The applicant is aware that the card passport (Tarjeta Pasaporte) can only be used in the border crossings by land and for visiting the border zone; it might not be used to travel to the territory of the Mexican Republic or used for international air trips.

The applicant shall complete the information needed in the request of the FMM, as appears in his/her passport.

The applicant accepts under oath that the information and documents provided are true; therefore, the applicant acknowledges herein that if any false information is provided, he/she could be subject to penalties in accordance with the applicable legal regulation.

Conditions of the Forma Migratoria Múltiple obtained by electronic means

The Forma Migratoria Múltiple can be obtained by electronic means through the Institute website, the foreigners, who enter to the country by land, can obtain it through the facilities aimed for the international transit of people.

The applicant agrees that the status condition of stay that he/she shall obtain, by means of the information provided, only be as avisitor without permission to work.

The applicant acknowledges herein that the FMM has a maximum validity of 180 calendar days and shall be valid for one entry only.

The applicant acknowledges herein that the validity term of the FMM shall start upon the migratory stamp is fixed, provided with, he/she should comply with the requirements to enter Mexico.

The applicant shall print and bring the FMM to the facility aimed for the international transit of persons where he/she wishes to enter through.

The applicant acknowledges herein that the fees paid to obtain the condition of stay, is not a guarantee to enter Mexico.

The applicant shall produce a valid and current passport or card passport (Tarjeta Pasaporte), as well as the FMM shall be produced at the time his/her entry is requested.

Fields 11 and 12 will not be needed for entries by land.

Holders of special passports, special visas, current cards or credentials issued by the National Migration Institute (INM) must fill out this form for statistical purposes. In none of those cases shall this immigration form grant any immigration status.

Holders of Mexican visas granting permission to obtain a credential or card must fill out this immigration form and present it at the point of entry. Within 30 days of their entry into the country, they must apply to exchange this immigration form for a card or credential at the immigration office corresponding to their address.

UPON EXPIRY OF THAT DEADLINE, THIS FORM SHALL NO LONGER AUTHORIZE YOUR LEGAL PRESENCE IN MEXICO.

Foreigners who because of their nationality do not require visa and who plan to pursue tourism or other activities in Mexico not requiring to stay longer than 180 days or entail financial remuneration must fill out this immigration form and present it at the point of entry. During their time in Mexico, they must retain the exit-record portion bearing the immigration stamp from the entry point, since it proves their legal presence in the country and must be surrendered upon exit.

All personal data collection will be protected by, included in, and processed by the INM's personal data management systems, which are registered with the IFAI. The General Directorate for Immigration Control and Verification is responsible for the safekeeping of the personal data indicated on this document, and requests for acces there to shall be made to the INM's Liaison Unit

IMPORTANT During your stay in Mexico, you must retain this immigration form and surrender it upon leaving the country.

If, on account of your visa, the immigration officer marks the "CANJE" (Exchange) option on this immigration form, you must report to the immigration office corresponding to your address within 30 days of entering the country. If the immigration officer marks any of the options in the "ESTANCIA MÁXIMA HASTA 180 DÍAS" (Maximum stay up to 180 days) section, this immigration form authorizes your legal presence in the country.

You may not pursue remunerated activities if you do not have an immigration status under which such activities are permitted.

By Air

General requirements

The applicant of an electronically-obtained Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMME) for entry by air must have in his or her possession a valid and unexpired passport in accordance with the international law regulations; in case the country of citizenship requires it, the passport must have a valid unexpired visa.

The applicant is aware that the only document that can be used to travel by air into the Mexican Republic is a valid and unexpired (booklet-type) passport.

The applicant must enter the information required by the electronically-obtained Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMME) for entry by air as it appears in his or her passport.

The applicant states under oath to state the truth that the information and documents provided are true, and is thus aware that should false information be given he or she may be sanctioned in accordance with applicable law.

Conditions of the electronically-obtained multiple immigration form

The Forma Migratoria Múltiple for entry by air may be obtained electronically through the Institute’s web portal by foreign nationals entering the country by air through those places intended for international passenger transit.

The applicant agrees that the permit to stay that he or she shall obtain by entering information shall be that of a visitor without a permit to carry out gainful activities.

The applicant understands that the electronically-obtained Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMME) for entry by air has a maximum validity of 180 calendar days and can only be used for a single entry.

The applicant understands that the validity of the electronically-obtained Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMME) for entry by air shall start at the time the immigration seal is stamped, provided he or she meets the requirements for entering into Mexico.

The applicant must print the electronically-obtained Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMME) for entry by air and must submit it at the place intended for international passenger transit where he or she intends to enter.

The applicant must present his or her passport and, if required due to his or her country of citizenship, a valid and non-expired visa, as well as the electronically-obtained Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMME) for entry by air at the time of applying for entry.
