International flights on January 21 operated by Air India under Vande Bharat Mission

Jan 21, 2021

The global pandemic forced many countries to take tough decisions, one of which was the need to selectively close their borders. Other than essential items and services, the air traffic world over had to be stopped for a period of time. These necessary restrictions in different countries left many citizens of other nations stranded in foreign lands far away from their families and friends.

To mitigate the situation, on the 6th of May, 2020, the ‘Vande Bharat Mission’ was launched by the Central Government of India. This idea was handy for stranded Indians in different places all over the world to return to their destinations via the provided international repatriation flights.

India's ministry of Civil Aviation reported that as of 15th January 2021, Air India Group had supervised 14,114 repatriation flights. This accounted for more than 18.25 lakh passengers on these flights. Further details however revealed that 7.052 flights with 11.42 lakh passengers were India bound while 7,062 flights with 7.53 lakh people were headed to other foreign countries.

This intervention has entered Phase-9 which will  kick-start on the 1st February 2021.
