Northern Cyprus

Northern Cyprus, officially known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), is a de facto state recognized only by Turkey. Foreigners who wish to travel to Northern Cyprus may need to obtain a visa depending on their nationality and purpose of travel.

Visa Regulations

Nationals of Syria, Nigeria, and Armenia need to apply in person at a TRNC Embassy, Representative Office, or Consulate General abroad to obtain a visa prior to their travel to Northern Cyprus. Nationals of other countries not listed above can be issued a visa by the Immigration Officer at the designated ports and border crossings. However, obtaining a visa from TRNC missions abroad does not guarantee entry to the country. The Immigration Officer at the designated ports and border crossings has the discretion to grant permission to enter the country.

General Information

Foreigners visiting Northern Cyprus may be granted a visa for up to 90 days, depending on its type, at the designated ports and border crossings provided that they fulfill the conditions stipulated in the Aliens and Immigration Law and they are not deemed unfit to enter the country. The length of stay granted at the designated ports and border crossings of Northern Cyprus cannot exceed 90 days within a period of 180 days. Foreigners who wish to stay in Northern Cyprus for more than 90 days are required to obtain a residence permit.

Entry to and departure from Northern Cyprus is possible through designated ports and border crossings with a valid passport or travel document. The type and duration of the visa issued to foreigners is stamped on the travel document by the Immigration Officers.

Foreigners’ stay in the country cannot exceed the date stamped on their travel documents, and they cannot use the visa for reasons other than its original purpose. For example, working with a tourist or student visa is considered a visa violation.

Recommendations for visa applicants:

It is recommended to make visa applications at least 1 month in advance of the intended travel date. Visa applications will be processed within a maximum of 3 working days. It is recommended to contact the nearest TRNC mission abroad to get an appointment before applying for a visa.

Requirements for Traveling to Northern Cyprus

Citizens of the Republic of Turkey must have a valid passport or identity card for traveling to Northern Cyprus. Citizens of the European Union (EU) and Schengen Area countries must have a valid passport or national identity card. Citizens of other countries must have a valid passport.

The validity of travel documents varies based on the country of origin.

  • Citizens of countries that do not have an Embassy, Consulate General, Consulate, or Representative Office in Northern Cyprus and citizens of non-EU countries must have a passport or travel document valid for at least 6 months to be able to enter the country.

  • Citizens of countries that have an Embassy, Consulate General, Consulate, or Representative Office in Northern Cyprus and citizens of EU countries must have a passport or travel document valid for at least 2 months to be able to enter Northern Cyprus.

Procedures for Entry of Foreigners to Northern Cyprus

Foreigners may be required to provide the following documents and information to the Immigration Officer at the port of entry:

  • Proof of sufficient financial means to stay in the country and return home.

  • Proof of accommodation in the country, such as a hotel payment receipt, or the name and address of the invitee.

  • Accurate and convincing declaration of the purpose of the visit.

  • Formal letter from the inviting institution for internships, courses, or student exchange programs.

  • Official acceptance letter from the university for higher education.

  • Letter of invitation providing name, address, phone number, and other contact information for visiting 

Visa Types and Periods of Stay in TRNC

Tourist Visa

  • Maximum stay of 30 days for those visiting for tourism and staying in hotels or rented accommodations

  • Visitors with proof of prior payment for accommodation can apply for a visa up to 90 days

Family Visit Visa

  • Visitors staying with inviting family members can apply for a visa up to 60 days

Business and Official Visit Visa

  • Visitors coming for official visits, business meetings, conferences, seminars, festivals, fairs, exhibitions, sporting events, cultural and artistic events, health tourism, and similar purposes can apply for a visa up to 90 days

Internship, Course, Exchange Program, and In-Service Training Visa

  • Foreigners coming for internships, courses, student exchange programs, and in-service training can apply for a visa up to 90 days with formal acceptance letters

Work Permit Visa

  • Issued for a period of 30 days for foreigners with a preliminary permit in accordance with the Law on Work Permits of Foreigners

  • Citizens of countries without a representative office in TRNC must have a passport valid for at least two years to apply for a work permit visa

Business Establishment Visa

  • Visitors coming to start a business can apply for a visa for a period of 30 days, provided they have the funds to start a business

Residence Permit Visa

Different types of visas are issued for foreigners who will apply for one of the residence permit types:

  • Family Residence Permit Visa: up to 90 days

  • Visa Due to Ownership of Immovable Property: up to 90 days

  • Student Residence Permit Application Visa: up to 60 days with formal student registration or pre-registration letter

  • Judicial and Administrative Purposes Visa: for the term of duty

  • Scientific Research Visa: for the duration of research

  • Graduates of TRNC Universities Visa: valid for 30 days for graduates of 2-year higher education programs or those who have studied at least 3 years in any of the 4-year higher education programs in TRNC.
