Canada's Temporary Immigration Measures for Gaza: Eligibility and Application
Canada has initiated temporary immigration measures to support individuals in Gaza with Canadian family connections amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Marc Miller, has announced that family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, as well as Israelis and Palestinians currently in Canada, are eligible for temporary residency. This information comes according to VisaGuide.World.
Miller highlighted the challenges of leaving the region, emphasizing that Canadian authorities cannot intervene directly. He noted that exiting the region is subject to approval by Israel.
Miller elaborated that foreign national family members of Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents who have departed from Israel and the Palestinian Territories, along with Israelis and Palestinians in Canada who are apprehensive about returning, can apply for a study or open work permit without a fee.
Recognizing the concerns of Canadians for the safety of their relatives in Gaza, Miller assured that processing new and ongoing permanent residence applications for Palestinians will be a priority.
"The humanitarian crisis we are witnessing is heart-wrenching, and the on-the-ground reality poses significant challenges. Israelis and Palestinians in Canada will continue to find a safe haven here, and we are committed to assisting those who have fled the region and their eligible family members still in Gaza," said Minister Miller.
He also reiterated Canada's commitment to addressing the needs of those seeking support, underlining the country's adaptable approach.
Government data reveals that over 300 individuals evacuated from Gaza are now in Canada.
Family members of Canadians planning to leave Gaza must fulfill various admissibility and eligibility criteria before being granted permission to travel to Canada.
Those eligible include spouses, common-law partners, children, siblings, grandchildren, parents, grandparents of a Canadian anchor, and immediate family members.
Immediate family members of Canadians or permanent residents, as well as Israelis and Palestinians in Canada, must have valid temporary resident status to apply for the permit.
Additionally, permanent residents and Canadian family members arriving from Gaza should be aware of the possibility of applying online for medical coverage, which is available for a limited time to provide immediate medical assistance upon arrival.
