The VisaGuide.World Passport Index's latest update reveals that as of December 2023, the strongest passports globally belong to Spain, Singapore, and Germany.

Spain has emerged as the leader in this ranking, granting its citizens the privilege of traveling to 43 countries without a passport and to 106 countries visa-free. Additionally, Spanish passport holders can access 11 destinations with just a travel authorization, 30 with a visa upon arrival, and 18 with a pre-obtained online visa. Only 18 countries require a traditional visa from Spanish nationals, out of approximately 200, according to VisaGuide.World. A significant development contributing to Spain's top ranking is China's recent decision to waive entry visas for citizens of six countries, including Spain.

The Most Powerful Asian Passport for 2023

Singapore's passport remains the most powerful in Asia and the second most powerful globally. Singaporeans enjoy visa-free access to 156 destinations, though they require a traditional visa for 20 countries. They can also enter eight countries with a travel authorization, 30 with a visa on arrival, and 12 with an electronic visa. Singapore has made significant strides in strengthening its passport, gaining visa-free access to additional countries in 2023.

Notably, Kosovo abolished visas for Singapore in July, reciprocating Singapore's move to introduce e-visas for Kosovo citizens. In the same month, China reinstated 15-day visa-free entry for Singaporeans, with plans to extend this to 30 days.

Germany's passport ranks as the third most powerful and second best in Europe as of December 2023. German citizens enjoy passport-free access to 43 countries and visa-free access to 106. They need an eTA for 11 countries, a visa on arrival for 29, an eVisa for 19, and a traditional visa for 18.

Following Germany, Italy ranks fourth, with France, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark rounding out the top ten. Aside from second-ranked Singapore and 15th-placed Japan, all other passports in the top 20 are from European countries.

List of Non-EU Passports in the Top 20

In a recent ranking of global destinations based on various factors, several non-EU/Schengen countries have secured notable positions. Notably, Singapore achieved an impressive second place, demonstrating its significant appeal and robust attributes. Japan, known for its unique blend of tradition and modernity, also made a strong showing, coming in at the 15th spot. 

Following closely in the rankings, South Korea, a hub of technological innovation and rich culture, was placed 27th.

The United Kingdom, steeped in history and global influence, secured the 28th position, closely trailed by New Zealand at 29th, a country celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and progressive policies. Australia, known for its diverse ecosystem and vibrant cities, ranked 34th, highlighting its appeal as a destination.

Furthermore, Canada, renowned for its high quality of life and natural beauty, was positioned at 38th. The United Arab Emirates, a symbol of rapid modernization and luxury, secured the 39th spot. Rounding off this distinguished list, the United States claimed the 40th position, reflecting its status as a powerhouse of cultural and economic influence.
