Algeria Announces Online Visa Application for Tourism
The government of Algeria has recently unveiled plans to streamline the process of obtaining travel authorization for the country by introducing a new electronic visa.
Prime Minister's Announcement
On February 12th, 2020, Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad made the official announcement during a session at the National People's Assembly. He emphasized the potential of an e-visa system to facilitate the entry of foreign tourists and business investors into Algeria.
Action Plan: 'Destination Algeria'
The e-visa initiative is part of a comprehensive action plan called 'Destination Algeria,' which aims to boost tourism within the country. The plan includes the launch of a promotional campaign in collaboration with travel agencies to highlight Algeria as an attractive destination.
Diplomatic and Consular Network's Role
According to the government action plan, the Algerian diplomatic and consular network will be responsible for attracting foreign investment and promoting Algeria as a tourist hotspot. The upcoming e-visa system will play a significant role in achieving these objectives.
Changing Tourism Landscape
Algeria has not witnessed the same level of tourist arrivals as its neighboring North African countries. Historically, tourism did not feature prominently in the country's development plans. However, with the implementation of the government's action plan and the introduction of the e-visa, this is expected to change.
Explore Algeria's Rich Heritage
The Algerian online visa will provide an opportunity for tourists to explore the country's numerous historical and cultural attractions. Visitors will be able to easily access sites such as the Casbah of Algiers, Fort Santa Cruz in Oran, and the ancient Roman-Berber ruins of Timgad.
Upcoming Implementation
While an official date for the launch of the Algeria e-Visa has not been announced yet, its introduction is expected to take place in the near future. Travelers and potential investors can look forward to a more streamlined and accessible process for visiting Algeria.
Updates to Algerian Visa Application Procedures
The current visa application system in Algeria is set to be replaced by an upcoming online visa application process. The current system has long been criticized for its complexity, posing challenges to the tourism sector's growth in the country.
Checking Visa Requirements
Before planning a trip to Algeria, all visitors should ensure they are aware of the visa requirements for the country. Currently, the majority of foreign citizens must personally apply for an Algerian visa at an embassy or consulate.
Visa-Exempt Countries
Algeria has only 7 visa-exempt countries, which are primarily located in North and West Africa. Citizens of these countries, as well as resident refugees and stateless individuals, are permitted to enter Algeria for tourism or business purposes for a maximum stay of 90 days.
The visa-exempt countries are:
- Libya
- Malaysia
- Mali
- Mauritania
- Morocco
- Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic
- Seychelles
- Tunisia
Applying for a Visa
For all other foreign citizens, it is currently necessary to apply for an Algerian visa at an Algerian embassy or consulate in their country of residence. The application process requires supporting documentation, including a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Algeria.
Additional requirements include presenting confirmation of a hotel booking or a certificate from an Algerian travel agency, as well as proof of travel insurance that covers the duration of the stay.
Current Application Process
To obtain an Algerian tourist visa valid for 90 days, it is crucial to submit an embassy application well in advance. The visa approval process can take up to 2 weeks. However, with the introduction of the online Algeria visa application, this process is expected to be significantly streamlined and simplified.
