Delay in ETIAS Launch; Implementation Pushed to 2024
The launch of the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) has been postponed until 2024 by the European Commission. The delay is due to the unavailability of the necessary systems, such as the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the Schengen Information System (SIS), which are undergoing upgrades. Interoperability between these systems is crucial for their success. Additionally, there have been delays in preparing the required equipment for using the EES at Schengen border crossing points.
The Dependence of ETIAS Launch on EES Readiness
Once ETIAS launches, it will become mandatory for visa-exempt foreign travelers to Europe. They will need to submit an ETIAS application to travel to European Union countries in the Schengen Area, associated microstates, and 4 non-EU Schengen countries.
Strengthening Border Security
The aim of ETIAS is to identify potential security risks to EU borders before visa-free travelers arrive in the region. It does this by scanning passenger data against a number of security databases, including SIS.
Interconnected Systems: ETIAS and EES
The EES is also a key component in this process. "ETIAS is being developed closely with the Entry/Exit System," our EC source explained. "This means that ETIAS relies on data provided by the EES for the identification of risks."
Streamlining Travel Procedures
The EES is key to upgrading electronic checks and eliminating manual passport controls. This, in turn, will speed up queues for entry to the Schengen Area and improve security.
In summary, ETIAS will enhance security by screening visa-exempt travelers before their arrival, relying on the interconnected systems of ETIAS and EES. It will simplify travel procedures and contribute to more efficient border management.
ETIAS Visa Waiver Launch Scheduled for 2024
The launch date for the ETIAS visa waiver in 2024 is yet to be confirmed. As soon as the date is available, it will be published on HandyVisas, providing valuable information to the public.
IT System Availability
According to our EC source, the IT system required for the operation of ETIAS is expected to be available sometime in 2023. The exact timeframe for its availability has not been specified. However, the entry into operation of ETIAS will only occur 5 to 6 months after the entry into operation of the EES (Entry/Exit System).
Delayed Launch of EES
Initially scheduled to launch in May 2023, the EES implementation faced delays. eu-LISA, the agency responsible for its implementation, revealed that the original date was no longer feasible due to contractor delays.
Timeline Discussion at Schengen Council Meeting
The timeline for the full entry into operation of the EES is set to be discussed at the upcoming Schengen Council meeting on March 9. This meeting will provide an opportunity to address the delays and establish a revised timeline.
Minimizing Delays and Ensuring Interoperability
The source emphasized that the Commission will continue to work closely with Member States and eu-LISA to minimize the impact of the delays and ensure interoperability as mandated. Efforts will be made to overcome the challenges and deliver the EES system as efficiently as possible.
Note: Please be aware that the information provided is accurate up until September 2021, and specific updates regarding the ETIAS visa waiver and EES may have occurred after this knowledge cutoff date.
