Breaking Borders: EU and Kazakhstan Forge Ahead in Schengen Visa Facilitation Talks
The European Union and Kazakhstan have advanced in providing Schengen visas for citizens of Kazakhstan. The Kazakhastan authorities have taken steps to facilitate their citizens' travel to European Union. The process is in the second round of discussion with the EU authorities for the Schengen visa application process.
During a meeting between the Deputy foreign minister of Kazakhastan, Alibek Bakayev and the EU ambassador to Kazakhstan, it was discussed that holding the second round of consultation on Schengen visas should be taken further.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the matter of holding the consultations was decided during the meeting. In contrast, the authority did not announce when the second round of talks would begin.
What are the Key Objectives of the Schengen Visa Discussion Between Kazakhstan and the EU?
Kazakhstan has several objectives it hopes to achieve through these discussions with the EU:
- Reduced Consular Fees: Kazakhstan seeks reduced consular fees for its citizens applying for Schengen visas, making travel more affordable and accessible.
- Extended Visa Validity: The country aims for Schengen visas with extended validity periods, allowing travellers more flexible plans.
- Faster Processing: Kazakhstan pushes for reduced visa processing times, ensuring a smoother and quicker application process.
Kazakhstan’s Commitment Towards Obtaining Permission for Schengen Visas
In December of last year, authorities of Kazakhastan declared that the country has made many advancements in different fields. Henceforth, there should be no fear of irregular migration. Kazakhstan also mentioned that it would cooperate on the readmission of its citizens, which is inconsistent with the EU.
In addition to the information mentioned above, the authorities of Kazakhstan have reminded the EU that it has been providing visa-free entry for EU citizens since 2017.
Kazakhstan has yet to request visa-free travel agreements with the European Union. It only wants to assure its citizens that they can get Schengen Visa through simplified procedures.

In October 2023, the EU Council said it is committed to deepening its cooperation with Kazakhstan. This council also praised the different advancements that Kazakhstan has made in various fields.

Just like people in other parts of the world must provide different documents to enter the Schengen region, the same applies to Kazakhstan. The people of Kazakhstan need to provide proof of accommodation, proof of having purchased travel health insurance, a roundtrip itinerary, and proof of sufficient financial means.
