Kenya eTA Eligibility

Kenya eTA Eligibility

The Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital permit facilitating entry for eligible visitors. Administered by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, this semi-automated system grants permission to travel to Kenya. While the eTA signifies approval for travel, the final decision on admissibility rests with immigration officers upon arrival.

The online Kenya eTA application process is streamlined for efficiency, requiring only a few minutes for the submission of essential personal and passport details. Key prerequisites include a valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months and a confirmed return ticket. Once approved, the eTA is electronically linked to the applicant's passport, and a PDF copy is promptly delivered via email.

The Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), available online, allows for a range of activities upon approval, including:

  • Tourism: Exploring Kenya's diverse attractions as a tourist.
  • Friends & Family: Visiting friends and family members residing in Kenya.
  • Getting Married: Participating in wedding ceremonies or related events.
  • Honeymoon: Embarking on a honeymoon trip within Kenya.
  • East Africa Tourism: Engaging in tourism activities across the East African region.
  • Business: Conducting business activities in Kenya.
  • Conference: Attending conferences and related events.
  • Crew (Planes or Ships): Serving as a crew member on aircraft or ships.
  • Seaman (Fishing Vessel): Engaging in seafaring activities on fishing vessels.
  • Diplomat on Official Visit: Diplomats traveling for official purposes.
  • Religious Visit: Undertaking visits for religious purposes.
  • Transit: Passing through Kenya en route to another destination.

It's crucial to adhere to the specific guidelines and regulations associated with each activity, ensuring a smooth and lawful experience during the stay in Kenya.

Countries Eligible for Kenya ETA

The Kenya ETA is compulsory for all foreign visitors, excluding citizens of the East African Community (EAC) Member States. The eligible EAC Member States encompass:

  1. The Republic of Burundi
  2. The Democratic Republic of the Congo
  3. The Federal Republic of Somalia
  4. The Republic of Kenya
  5. The Republic of Rwanda
  6. The Republic of South Sudan
  7. The Republic of Uganda
  8. The United Republic of Tanzania

All eligible travellers for Kenya ETA, including children under 18, must apply for the Kenya ETA through the official government website. For minors, the application is the responsibility of the legal guardian, parent, or accompanying adult.

Do I need an eVisa or visa with ETA to enter Kenya?

As of January 2024, Kenya has transitioned to a visa-free system, eliminating the need for a traditional visa. Instead, travelers are now required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to visit Kenya seamlessly. This means that, currently, there is no necessity for a visa; the eTA suffices for entry into the country.

Kenya eVisa Application Requirements

Securing an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for Kenya is a straightforward process. To initiate an online ETA application for Kenya, applicants must ensure they possess the following:

  • Passport Requirements:
    • A passport from an eligible country, valid for a minimum of 6 months from the intended entry date.
    • At least 2 blank pages in the passport to accommodate exit/entry stamps at the Kenyan border.
  • Documentation:
    • A copy of the passport information page.
    • Recent color photograph of the traveler, passport size.
  • Payment Method:
    • A valid debit or credit card to facilitate the payment of the Kenyan online visa application fee.
  • Proof of Travel:
    • Evidence of travel plans, which may include a confirmation email from the hotel reservation, flight confirmation, invitation or referral letter, and a comprehensive travel itinerary.
  • Contact Information:
    • A current email address for receiving the approved travel ETA to Kenya.

Upon the successful submission of the Kenya ETA application form and receipt of the approved ETA, it is essential to prepare for the journey by having at least one printed copy of the ETA.

Additionally, travelers must present the following documents upon arrival:

  • Passport: The same passport used for completing the Kenya ETA application form.
  • Financial Documentation: Proof of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay.
  • Travel Itinerary: Proof of return/onward travel, such as an airline ticket.

Ensuring compliance with these requirements will facilitate a smooth and hassle-free entry into Kenya.
